Psych is a highly adaptable, low-powered electric vehicle tailored to the needs of a broad set of urban commuters encouraging a shift away from high emissions lightweight vehicles within the urban landscape. A fully electric, bi-directional steering hub allows the user to switch Psych’s stance, depending on the seated or standing position. This ability to shift between riding positions significantly broadens carrying capacity and allows for different uses. Psych has the potential to be employed as a family vehicle that transitions naturally through multiple generations of ownership, alleviating environmental concerns while enhancing travel capabilities and commuting experience.

Michaela Lawn, Shubham Ghanatha and Les Meadows. We are a team of three industrial designers who recently graduated from Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand. Our honours project was an in-depth study into the current state of urban commuting, healthy-city trends and emerging technologies, with the aim of designing and prototyping an innovative mode of personal transport. Our primary research identified several areas that made it difficult for commuters to adopt more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, and helped us to better understand how and why motor cars are being used within urban spaces. Our goal is to continue to refine our design and develop a viable alternative for general commuting, one that not only reduces carbon emissions, but also makes cities easier to engage with by alleviating congestion.
