Instead of using primary potato starch, this initiative focuses on repurposing by-products like washing slurries, potato peels, and broken chips. Focusing on the Ethiopian potato chip industry, Bioplastics from Potato Waste addresses both environmental pollution and efficient resource utilisation.

Bio and Emerging Technology Institute(BETin)

Firew Tafesse is a researcher working at Bio and Emerging Technology Institute, Ethiopia. He has incredible teaching and research experiences in the area of chemistry and food science. He has involved in different research projects in which he has contributed a lot for their successes. He has researched on starch recovery from wastes of potato processing industries. Currently, tones of solid and liquid wastes are being damped as landfill, that may have negative environmental impacts. In addition, he has developed a prototype for degradable bioplastic sheet from the wastes which could be used for different applications.
